چکیده

A cosmogenic radionuclide Be-7 (half life 53.3 days) results from nuclear interactions of galactic cosmic rays in the Earth’s atmosphere. Most of Be-7 is produced in the lower stratosphere and slowly transported to the surface. Be-7 plays a role of atmospheric tracer and its measurements provide an important clue on atmospheric air mass motions. We have continuously measured the Be-7 concentrations in Tokyo since 2002. The data in 2002-2006 indicated clear enhancements of Be-7 concentrations in spring and autumn every year. The seasonal variations are not associated with scavenging by precipitation because the surface Be-7 concentrations do not correlate with rainfall. We suggested a possibility that the stratospheric Be-7 are brought to the upper troposphere through a large-scale air mass exchange between the stratosphere and troposphere. The air mass exchange is inferred to occur in association with a periodic passage (a period of a few days) of a pair of traveling high pressure and extratropical low pressure over Japan in spring and autumn.

30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE HiRes Limits on the Tau Neutrino Flux at the Highest Energies

Data from the High Resolution Fly’s Eye detector that measures cosmic rays with the fluorescence technique is used to set limits on the flux of tau neutrinos in the energy range from 10 to 10 eV. This energy range is particularly interesting as we expect a guaranteed flux of cosmogenic neutrinos from the GZK mechanism.

30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE Nuclear Cosmic Rays propagation in the Atmosphere

The transport of the nuclear cosmic ray flux in the atmosphere is studied and the atmospheric corrections to be applied to the measurements are calculated. The contribution of the calculated corrections to the accuracy of the experimental results are discussed and evaluated over the kinetic energy range 10-10 GeV/n. The Boron (B) and Carbon (C) elements system is used as a test case. It is show...

30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE Air fluorescence yield dependence on atmospheric parameters

The fluorescence detection of ultra high energy cosmic rays requires a detailed knowledge of the fluorescence light emission from nitrogen molecules over a wide range of atmospheric parameters, corresponding to altitudes typical of the cosmic ray shower development in the atmosphere. We have made a precise measurement of the fluorescence light spectrum excited by MeV electrons in air. The relat...

30th International Cosmic Ray Conference

In the fluorescence detection of ultra high energy (& 10 eV) cosmic rays, the number of emitted fluorescence photons is assumed to be proportional to the energy deposited in air by shower particles. We have performed measurements of the fluorescence yield in atmospheric gases excited by electrons over energies ranging from keV to hundreds of MeV in several accelerators. We found that within the...
